this is a super important story about a Disciple Scholar Hero that's a total must read:

Some of my sisters work in Australia. On a reservation, among the Aborigines, there was an elderly man. I can assure you that you have never seen a situation as difficult as that poor old man's. He was completely ignored by everyone. His home was disordered and dirty.

I told him, "Please, let me clean your house, wash your clothes, adn make your bed." He answered, "I'm okay like this. Let it be."

I said again, "You will be still better if you allow me to do it."

He finally agreed. So I was able to clean his house adn wash his clothes. I discovered a beautiful lamp, covered with dust. Only God knows how many years had passed since he last lit it.

I said to him, "Don't you light your lamp? Don't you ever use it?"

He answered, "No. No one comes to see me. I have no need to light it. Who would I light it for?"

I asked, "Would you light it every night if the sisters came?"

He replied, "Of course."

From that day on the Sisters committed themselves to visiting him every evening. We cleaned the lamp, and the sisters would light it every evening.

Two years passed. I had completely forgotten that man. He sent this message: "Tell my friend that the light she lit in my life continues to shine still."

I thought it was a very small thing. We often neglect small things.

I hope that it meant as much to you as it did to me.

She is a true DS Hero.

I think that everyone should focus on the importance of her life and know that you could make that kind of difference too.

Maybe you should.

Maybe if everyone tried to make a difference, in just one person's life, we would have a new kind of world.

A better world.

I hope that everyone can try this.

This is another thing you should recognize... the light from the story can be viewed as the gospel.

The gospel needs to be shared too.

Group Project Week 1

hey everyone.

(all one of you)

it's tierre.

i just wanted to let you know how the progress is coming for our group project.

PS - i am in the work hard (balance) group.

last friday we were unsure which service project we wanted to do and who we wanted to pick to exemplify disciple scholarship in the area of hard work.

by the end of class the only conclusion that we could come up with would be to meet again over the week.

so yesterday we met again.

we all brought ideas of who our disciple-scholar could be.

here were a few of the options:

Handel = he composed the Messiah (then we could go carol at nursing homes)
Bill Gates = i hope you know who he is (we could collect money and donate it to his charity)
Erin Gruhel = the teacher portrayed in the movie Freedom Writers (we could tutor children)

But in the end...

we chose...

Mother Teresa = all kinds of service projects and then we are going to relate them to her life and the services she did!

i am very excited because we made a great choice!

yay for our group!

and way to meet outside of class!

there are a lot of thought buzzing around in my head right now, so i am just going to start writing/typing and see what comes out.

anyway, one project that made a better disciple scholar for school was getting to perform a dance called "just for now" at the Senior Showcase. I guess that seems kind of strange but it was a great experience to choreograph and perform a dance so that others could understand how i feel. also, it was a great missionary opportunity for me because many of the other dancers in the piece weren't members. we practiced in the stake center at my church and it was a good opportunity for them to talk a little about the gospel. then at one practice one of my friends found out that one of her family friends had just passed away. we had an opportunity to pray together in the church, and even though it wasn't necessarily the typical prayer that you would hear in a mormon church. it was a great experience for all of us to have. we came closer together as friends, learned more about dancing and learned about leadership and instruction and working together, and we learned about coming closer to our Father in Heaven and relying on Him in times of trial!

school in zion - take 2

hello.

it's tierre.

we went to the school in zion museum again.

it's on the JFSB on the second floor.

(in case you want to go and you probably should)

and it is very cool there and there are a lot of things to learn.

i loved all the stuff there and there was a beautiful picture that i think could be my very favorite one ever.

it is a huge painting of the landscape with the temple

the temple is pretty small, but it stands out so much because it is bright white.

i love it because it shows the importance and purity of the temple.

many people don't consider it's importance in our lives, but those of us who do make it a priority gain so much.

the purity and peace that comes from the temple is really demonstrated in this picture

and if you go see it i think you will believe it too.

you will feel the spirit.

and you will also begin to realize how the temple is a huge part of a true disciple-scholar's life.

it is necessary to seek spiritual guidance there

and the revelations you receive there will bring eternal truths that a disciple-scholar will apply into their life.

i really encourage everyone to go to the museum, especially to see this painting.

it is beautiful

and you can feel the spirit when you look at it.

here are my thoughts on the Indian Village article

everything it said on power was so true, although there are some other things that I disagree with.

"You'll be destructive if you have power because if people don't join you, then you will destroy them."
"You give power to someone and supress others."

I am unsure about a few of the points though.

I am not sure if these are the true or right:

speaking of children he said, "Whatever is wanted is given to them."
and even though they knew he couldn't accomplish something and/or could be making a mistake the elders, "They'd let me experience it."

The only other problem I had with the article is that I believe it was somewhat hypocritical. The author said that people came in and took over his town giving them organization that they didn't want.

And i agree that that is a bad thing to do.

However, by trying to persuade us to follow his beliefs and his way of life...

isn't he doing the same thing to us that they did to him?

so...how is life?

it's tierre.

today i visited the Education in Zion Exhibit.

it is full of really cool things and i recommend that everyone visit it.

there was something cool that i learned:

i was just thinking about how grateful i was that we have modern conviences in our education

it watched a video about schools at the very beginning of the church's establishment

and what they were like back then

it was interesting the conditions that the players were in:

the schoolhouses were old and very small buildings
the children wrote on slates
sometimes they even used branches and carved into them with sticks

this really got me to thinking that there are a lot of things that i should really be grateful for here at Brigham Young University.

the buildings are beautiful and immaculate

there are places to eat and multiple resources

we have not only great professors but times and places that we can meet with them individually

there are so many things that i don't appreciate enough and i just thougt that everyone should know about them

i am grateful for many blessings that this university provides to all of it's students.

it truly is a School in Zion!

here's some info that i learned from the survey.
the area that i am most concerned about is grades
so here is what i learned about that:

- only 7% of students thought that they would earn a C grade
- actually 19% of them did

this means that students think they are capable of getting higher grades than they actually receive.
for me that means there are one of two reasons for that:
1. students are capable, but they are not putting in enough effort
2. students are overestimating their capabilities

i need to make sure that i understand my strengths and weaknesses and compare those to the difficulty of the course in order to figure out how well i will actually do in the course.
also, i need not to get discouraged.
college is obviously harder than high school.
i need to make sure that i don't get angry if i do not get straight A's.
that is not always possible.
i just need to try my hardest and do the very best that i can.

today we are learning about the library.

we started by going to the library's website at http://www.lib.byu.edu/.

cool things that we found about the library included:

info about Dial "M" for Murder
how to contact Saint Matthew (i am not going to put his number here because that would be creepy)
the tutorial under library instruction on the Harold B. Lee webpage
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday there is a lab in Room 2231 - this is a great tool to help you with research and paper writing
on the website: general search page, which is helpful for general and background research and it tells you where to go in the library to get more information on that subject
another cool thing the website does is put a star on a map of the library where the book you are looking for is located

3 things I must remember:

reference desk
the lab
subject librarians

and finally... something to blow your mind...

the ebsco host database

you can add any sites to your folder of info

then export to RefWorks

and it helps you make the bibliography.

just go and select your style and then viola, you have a bibliography!

metacognition is defined by Webster as: awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes.

i used metacognition when i planned out my week. when i look at my calendar or write in my planner i am using metacognition then too. also, i use it when i am making evaluations about my work. like after taking my first Book of Mormon test i decided that i would do well in that class as long as i kept studying the same way i had been. however, after taking my punctuation quiz in english today, i used metacognition to realize that i need to study harder.

now... think about this...

when do you use metacognition...

that's my food for thought!

so i had a meeting with amy.

i picked a topic that i am not very good at, which was time management.

we talked about how i can improve in this area

a few ideas included:

put information in my planner - which i have been doing and it is really helping me

also, i need to stay on campus to study, so that helps me

one last strategy that i have been trying to use is really looking at my calendar and planning in advance.

overall i am making progress.

University Life Week 1

hello.

it's tierre.

Life so far at college... has been interesting.

but don't worry i won't go into all of that.

this is about my University 101 class at Brigham Young Unviersity.

it all started with INTRODUCTIONS on DAY 1 and here are some of the things i have learned about the kids in our class:

everyone in the class loves to talk
Isaac is really from New York, not Utah
JaNae's last name means "the enemy" (should i be scared?)
two of the girls in that class are in my modern class, too
and one is afraid of balloons (this presents a problem because i really love balloons, i can even make a balloon arch... it is a strange talent)
